Series: Photographers On Etsy: Part 5

This is the fifth in a series of Photographers I will be featuring.  Each of the photographers are from Etsy.  Enjoy the interviews and please visit their shops.

Today I bring to you Steve and Carolyn Battaini of BlacksmithCreations www.etsy.com/shop/BlacksmithCreations

What type of photography is your favorite and why?
My favorite photography is landscape photography that takes me away, to a place that gives me peace. A good landscape scene is an insight into the beauty of nature from the photographer’s perspective. The scene is from a vantage point that is usually quite different than what I might initially see with my own eyes. It teaches and reminds me to be more observant too. A good photo can also take me away to places I know I will never be able to visit, yet still appreciate it’s beauty.

When did you first start doing photography?
Photography was introduced to my by the German born father, who used an 35mm Exacta with a Zeiss lens. When I was old enough he bought me my first real camera, an Exacta, which I still own. He purchased it in a San Francisco pawn shop for $50. He had access to film that had expiration dates beyond what a local store could have on the shelves, yet it still was good enough for an elementary school student to practice with. He got it free and thus I had an almost endless supply of free film. My girlfriend and I would walk a few blocks over to the canyon after school and create photos of the statuesque oak trees during many seasons and different times of day. We had a blast!

When you're not shooting photos, how do you spend your time?
As an Etsy shop owner, there are many duties that support the business, such as development of the products, forging the creation, marketing, customer relations, mailing, following up, ordering, etc.
Love to explore new places and locations, for inspiration. Recently joined a walking club here in Nevada County, to explore my local environment in ways and areas that I’ve always been curious about. It’s a two for one experience: experience new places close to home and meet interesting people who also appreciate the environment in which we live.

Did you go to school to study photography? If yes, where?
My schooling in photography consists of a class in high school, and several seminars along the way. My most memorable outdoor classes were photography walks in Death Valley with the National Park Ranger. We observed and came to appreciate the beauty of this seemingly desolate place. I learned that there is beauty beyond the barren rocks. I would be that probably 95% of the visitors never see this beauty. The rest of what I know is self-taught. I would like to continue my learning curve.

How would you describe your style?
I shoot for two different purposes: for Etsy product photos, and landscape photography to remember it by.

What type of camera(s) do you shoot with?
I use two cameras: a Canon D40 for my more serious work, and my iPhone 5S for quick snaps. I still own my original Exacta. I have inherited my Dad’s love of photography and his Hasselblad camera.

Series: Photographers On Etsy: Part 4

This is the fourth in a series of Photographers I will be featuring.  Each of the photographers are from Etsy.  Enjoy the interviews and please visit their shops.

I would like you to meet   Amanda Kinghorn   owner of  Amanda Kinghorn Photo www.etsy.com/uk/shop/AmandaKinghornPhoto?ref=si_shop

What type of photography is your favorite and why?   Landscape photography. I'm inspired by trying to capture the amazing landscapes all around me in the Scottish countryside. I particularly love long exposures, capturing the movement in water, skies etc and turning them into misty, flowing images. I also love taking images in the soft early morning light and after dusk when everything has a blue hue.

When did you first start doing photography?  Photography has been a hobby for around 10 years. I started out with an old minolta film camera that belonged to my dad. It had been sitting unused for years and I decided to go to a black and white film photography class and learn how to use it properly. I only used film for a couple of years, as it became increasingly difficult to find community darkrooms.

When you're not shooting photos, how do you spend your time?   Making Photo Wood blocks, selling prints and wood blocks at makers markets and art fairs, fair weather jogging!

Did you go to school to study photography? If yes, where?  No. I started off attending evening classes to learn the basics, and have attended a couple of workshops, but generally I am self taught. I'd love to give-up the day job and train as a professional photographer.

How would you describe your style?  calm, peaceful, traditional.

What type of camera(s) do you shoot with?  Canon D60.

And now for some photos

This is the third in a series of Photographers I will be featuring.  Each of the photographers are from Etsy.  Enjoy the interviews and please visit their shops.

Say hello to Kate Miller of  Katie Kisses The Sky. www.etsy.com/shop/KatieKissesTheSky

The Interview:

What type of photography is your favorite and why?  My favorite type of photography is nature photography: birds, butterflies, flowers, trees, sunsets and various animals. I love capturing nature because it is always beautiful, colorful, inspiring, and I am in awe of the sheer grandeur and vastness of the world we live in.

When did you first start doing photography?    I started doing photography from a very young age, taking my mother's camera whenever I got the chance. In middle school I received a little point-and-shoot that I took everywhere with me.

When you're not shooting photos, how do you spend your time?    When I'm not out taking pictures of whatever I can find or a portrait session, I am enjoying nature. I love going to the beach, kayaking, and hiking. I also love baking and watching movies.

Did you go to school to study photography? If yes, where?  I studied photography at Stevenson University just last year, and plan to continue studying it in the future.

How would you describe your style?  I would describe my style as full of light, soft, romantic and definitely colorful.

What type of camera(s) do you shoot with?  I use a Canon T3i with various different lenses.

Slide Show Test

Series: Photographers On Etsy: Part 2

This is the second in a series of Photographers I will be featuring.  Each of the photographers are from Etsy.  Enjoy the interviews and please visit their shops.

This is Molly Michael.  Molly is the face behind The Whole Wild World www.etsy.com/shop/thewholewildworld

The Interview:

What type of photography is your favorite and why?
Currently I am enjoying black and white photography, which is surprising because I am usually attracted to wild designs and bright colors. However, any landscape portraying this beautiful Earth is a favorite of mine.

When did you first start doing photography?
Photography has always been a constant in my life, however only recently have I pursued the passion to share my perspectives and captures with others. My photography corresponds with my travels and amazement of this Whole Wild World.

When you're not shooting photos, how do you spend your time?
Though I always have some form of a camera with me, aside from taking photos I love to hike, bike, swim, kayak, camp, read, learn, travel, and eat (of course). Being outside and with good company is the most pleasing way to spend my time.

Did you go to school to study photography? If yes, where?
The only photography class I ever took was an intro class in 10th grade at my public high school. I do hope to enroll in a club or class this summer!

How would you describe your style?
Straightforward and simple. When it comes to nature you don’t have to look hard for something beautiful. If I see something I find captivating I point and shoot. Rather than creating a scene, I appreciate what is already present.

What type of camera(s) do you shoot with?
Occasionally I use my iphone 4s, but would prefer to use my Nikon D3200.

Series: Photographers On Etsy

This is the first in a series of Photographers I will be featuring.  Each of the photographers are from Etsy.  Enjoy the interviews and please visit their shops.

Let me introduce you to Michael Darrell of M.Darr Photography www.etsy.com/shop/MDarrPhotography?ref=si_shop

What type of photography is your favorite and why? - Anything having to do with nature or wildlife. This world is going through some dark times which can bring a lot of people down and make them feel as if there's little hope, I too have been there. But once you're able to start looking at life, at this world, from different perspectives, it doesn't take long before you're able to see this world still has an amazing amount of beauty left to offer us all on a daily basis. That beauty is what I attempt to capture in every shot I take.

When did you first start doing photography? - I'd say about 7 years ago

When you're not shooting photos, how do you spend your time? Well I'm usually working. But during my free time you'll find me doing whatever I can to help improve my life. I recently took up meditation which has been an interesting as well as rewarding experience. If I have enough time I tend to find somewhere new to explore, whether it be an old abandoned building, or just going for a walk through the woods. The places I enjoy most are the ones with the least amount of human interaction/distraction

Did you go to school to study photography? If yes, where? No, I have not. I've always enjoyed learning how to do things on my own. If someone is there teaching me what to do, I feel it drains a considerable amount of fun and excitement out of the experience. "Learning as you go" has always worked best for me.

How would you describe your style? - I'm not really sure to be honest. I'm kind of all over the place. I think it all depends on the situation and what I'm shooting at that time. If something catches my eye, I'll try to capture it as best I can. If someone else would like to label me as having a certain style, great. But to me, I'm just someone with a camera enjoying the world around him

What type of camera(s) do you shoot with? - Nikon D3100. It's a bit outdated, but still does the job for now. I plan on upgrading shortly, I just happen to be a bit torn between Nikon and Canon at the moment.
